Sexually Transmitted Infections
Sexually transmitted infections, or STIs, have been around ever since human beings started congregating. They share a common mode of transmission—sexual contact. They are prevalent in most world populations, although the causative microbes don’t have the same infection frequency in all areas.
In this AudioBrick from the Reproductive collection, we’re going to cover STIs. A brief note on terminology: “sexually transmitted infection” has gradually replaced the older term “sexually transmitted disease” because patients frequently have no symptoms or even signs of disease on physical exam. These patients still need to be treated because they may pass their infection on to others.

- List the five most common sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in the United States.
- Describe the appearance and diagnosis of STIs with skin lesions and with penile or vaginal discharge.
- Describe the recommended screening strategies for STIs.
- Describe the use of vaccination or postexposure prophylaxis for STI prevention.
- Describe the special prevention strategies for patients who are pregnant, adolescent, and lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender.
